How to talk to your parents about not going to A&M
You can love a family and still not want the family school.
If your people bleed maroon, saying you want to look at Trinity or Hendrix can feel like a betrayal. It is not. It is a decision.
Start with what you are imagining, not a debate about rankings. “I want to see a campus where I can actually find a professor” lands better than “A&M is too big.”
Parents can leave a note in Pathwise. You have to accept it before it shapes the plan. That is the product rule and a useful kitchen-table rule: they get a voice, not the wheel.
Bring a cost picture, not a vibe. Estimated net vs sticker. Merit. Who runs the calculator. Who owns the list. The fight is usually about fear of missing the known path.
